Hard Drive Benchmarks

  • I get lots of people with just bad hard drives :( And it's very hard to explain that a SLOW hard drive can make the whole system a mess!

Here is an example of a failing/failed hard drive. Any hard drive at this stage or close to this stage will cause your system
to have random lock ups, freeze, blue screen of death, "this pc has encountered a problem and has restarted...blah blah".
Any huge drop in speed is a sign that drive has problems. And you will also notice high or much higher CPU use.
That is your system doing it's best to read from the dead or dying hard drive. :(

Here are some benchmarks of my hard drives most are healthy lol I replace them at any sign of FAILURE!
And I use the ONLY cloud back-up to NEVER be hacked :) OneDrive! OneDrive has it's downsides but the positive
far out weigh the negative! Price, sharing, easy to use are un-beaten! Download speed if you need to replace a hard drive
not so good. :( I recovered 983 gigabytes on a failed 2TB seagate but it took about 7 days! But that was still better
than losing my 20+ years of work data!

    Two 128 gig Crucial M550's in Raid-0 stripe 128.
This is where I keep my Windows 8 OS.

How fast are BIG hard drives?
Well this is one of my Western Digital Black 5 terabyte 128meg cache hard drives.
I keep work files, games and art/photo's on this drive. (Three partitions)

This is a Seagate 2 terabyte hard drive 64meg cache.
I keep software, drivers, TeamViewer work files in this one.

This is a Seagate 1 terabyte hard drive 64meg cache.
I have Ubuntu Linux "Xubuntu", Steam for linux, VirtualBox, with 7 test OS's on this one.
2% CPU use time to replace this one! LOL Not really but when it hits 5% it's gone.

As you can see from the screen shots the Crucial M550's having just two of them in Raid-0 is INSANELY fast!
But that 5 terabyte Western Digital Black is also a very fast hard drive and for the size & price a great drive!
Then you will also notice the CPU use on my hard drives is very low and I have a i7-5930K 6 core + HT 12 CPU's.
I could be using much more cpu and it wouldn't hurt a thing. LOL But high CPU use on a hard drive is always bad :(
    well unless you're de-fragmenting them!

Thanks for reading any questions just ask.

  • Atto "Direct I/O" Off will give you better max burst rates. 512KB to 64MB

    AS-SSD

HD Tach it an old benchmark but I still like.
You need to run it compatibility mode "Windows XP SP3"

  • Haven't optimized my SSD's in about a month. :(
But I'm liking the new version of AIDA64!

LOL about a million things open just updated to the new version of AIDA64 Extreme.
And wanted to do some testing but I can't close all my other stuff.
    I can live with a minimum of 7236.4 MB/S :)

You can tell from the jagged line it's time to optimize those drives! :D
