Those are post anniversary update builds, fixed a lot and got it to where it probably should have been at release.

That's why I was asking it was SO BUGGY and slow I was wondering if they fixed it yet. I have it on an Image so I can put it back as my OS if it gets better. And I have it on VM in linux for some reason that one won't upgrade or do updates. I must have said NO on the firewall to something it needed. LOL

There was a mess with getting many 10 boxes updated to the anniversary update.  Before this build, I got mine to take by updating every driver, going in safe mode, and disconnecting all usb devices and sata drives.  Finally took.

But then had another tower that did it automatically while I slept and I wake up to a welcome screen for anniversary edition

    *shrug*

    Update on THIS build.

Had to back my ram down to 2133 while waiting on MSI to put out a bios.  Oddly they pulled ALL of their beta bios in March and have been water tight about any further updates across ALL AM4 boards.  But with the ram backed down and the cpu running stock, it hasn't hiccuped.

Haven't bothered benching at this speed, but my encodes are going far faster while letting me do stuff with them running.  Best part is going with a custom loop, my temps maxed out at 41c.  Rad wasn't even warm, fans never ramped up.  So far this custom loop is well worth it.  Almost definitely going to drop in a block on the gpu and second small rad when I tear down to clean next year.  Loving the silent pc.  Now I can look back on the AIO units and realize several things about how they're rather crap.  The 280 AIO I had would literally get hot to the touch.

Well I put 10 back updated it to the newest version ran a few benchies. Just so much slower then 8 and feels so sluggish put 8 back LOL. At least I lasted with 10 about 28 hours this time! Even the BF1 frame rates (150 to 188 on ultra) were horrible in 10. :( BF1 ultra in win 8 are always 250+. I will check again in six months or so. I never went back to 8.1 I tried that once OMG what a POP (piece of poo) LOL I notice a few improvements Netflix, Onedrive.. on local account. But the updates turned all the crap back on, put all those ugly folder & icons back and some new software tracking crap. So Microsoft can see all the software installed and it's licencing??? So I guess microsoft is policing the software you install. For your protection of course. LOL
So I re-tweaked everything, updated everything, fixed the broken video drivers it installed three times! Then made an image to restore some day if it ever gets better.

I really wish more things supported Linux so much better of an OS and FREE! :) I can run Linux most of the time even with 32 of my games. :) Now I only buy games that run on both no Linux I don't buy it.

Yep I'm so spoiled with no sound no matter what I do I'm not sure I could live with air (normal air) ever again. Some moron on google-tube said water cooling is just for ego! LOLOL If it's not a low end to medium system and is doing any work on air they sound like 747's! LOL

Hmmm MSI noticed a glitch they can't fix? That's one thing I have always likes about Asus they roll out the bios updates pretty fast. Not that all of them are good! LOL But that's for dual bios chips are for! :)

I hope they fix that bios I want to see some crunch numbers from to see what it can do when you push it! I only trust information from friends! :)

I was telling Jim about your system because his is on deaths door. giga-sux board all his USB's are gone, one PCI-E slot... I told to check yours out that's what he was looking at the 1700.

  • Posted April 10, 2017

Well 1700 is where to go, 17x and 18x are just better binned but they all are seeming to cap at the same 4 gigs.  Even exotic cooling can't make them go much faster yet.  Bios may change there.  There's some scuttle butt that there are actually hardware issues on the chip that the agesa is patching around.  Who knows.  Regardless, this is a really strong showing from AMD at their make or break point.

And at the price point... $300 ..... why anyone would bother going for the 4 core chips is beyond me lol.

The MSI boards are a mess over the bios being pulled and ZERO word on any new bios or beta.  Apparently they are telling their mods the info but have some sort of nda on the mods.  I agree with the majority of users there though that it's rather shity MSI simply blamed AMD for releasing bad agesa code and then going water tight.  They're 1+ week behind EVERY other am4 vendor now.

And I am having 1 problem still after the ram was downclocked.  I did 12 hours straight of encoding and multiple hours of gaming, took a break and resumed..... pc just restarted.  Event viewer says I had a lost power incident, lmao.  Hoping it's a bios issue as I have zero clue where to start when it's completely random.

Yeah it seems hard to get real info. I look at benchmarks between X6950 & 1800X not sure about the numbers on the 1800X but my chip or games have never run as slow as the numbers I see them post. 6950 they say 110 FPS avg games I have never seen under 200 accept when I was using Windows 10 and even that the slowest was 150 FPS. Then they say DDR4-3200 on a 6950 runs at 63,000MB/s. LOL My 24/7 settings DDR4-3000 stays just under 70,000MB/s I can break 80,000.

So I think we will need to wait and see some real people using these new CPU's.

Have you tried higher speeds? It may have a sweet spot at a higher speed?

What kind of memory is it?

I had nothing but trouble with dam gskill! It only runs well at low speed or high voltage and ONLY at it's XMP speed. Even if you set XMP and drop it 10MHZ that crap memory is un-stable! Started with Crucial got sucked in with all the I love gskill crap, got the gskill HATED IT! Went back to a faster Crucial got into 10th place on Futuremarks top 100 (until the TITANX LOL) broke the 80,000MB/s and I can run any speed I like 100% stable at LOW voltage!

Corsair LPX, it's in the first post.

I can't get it up to speed, let alone faster.  AMD release was a mess.  Opening agesa code from AMD actually had ram speed settings disabled which is why we believe we can't get ram to speed up, it's all hard locked at 1T.  XMP also breaks the crap outta everything.

the am4 chips are suffering from a slower ipc than intel (ie, games take a hit) and a BIG hit from an issue in windows 10 (speaking of, creater update is almost out).  Though if you scale up to 4k, most games are basically scoring the same as it becomes far more gpu locked.

I can say that it's niiiiice on encoding and just everything about the system feels faster

  • Posted April 10, 2017

I thought the corsair was pretty good at changing speeds got to be problems in the CPU. :(

I was reading about the agesa code being bugged out and the gaming problems. :( AMD may have jumped the gun a bit to soon. Hopefully it can be patched with bios updates. AMD really needs to jump back into competition with intel it's been long enough! LOL  Intel has been out front since the core 2 duo chips. I was using the FX60 when those came out my $1,000 FX60 couldn't touch a $300 core 2 duo and the $1,000 intel extreme was INSANE. Been back on intel since then.

MSI put out a bios this week finally, actually a pretty stable bios aimed at getting stock functionality working.  Ram is still not officially supported at higher than 2666 by AMD, but it's no longer causing crashes and such.  Single rank sticks in dual channel still getting the best results.  XMP is directly frowned upon as even Intel doesn't claim that XMP is guaranteed (beyond the fact it's not even tested by AMD).

Not overclocking yet either, not terribly much options.  Feels about where we should have been at release honestly.  Still a good feeling to have AMD back in the game, and 16 threads at $300.... rofl.

Temps are still doing really well.  Even with the packaged stock cooler (which has cool leds on it) the load temps in most cases are staying around 50-52C.  With my custom loop I'm maxing at 42c still with NO fan or pump increase.  LOVE the real, big boy water parts lol.

Seen any other Ryzen chips yet?

Oh, and the creator update is live now for Win10.  Laptop pulled it damn near immediately, presumably since it's a touch screen with pen input.

Glad to here it's getting better! Yep LOVE my water cooling :) yes it's franken-cooling but my temps are super low all the time. No fans on right now temp highest core 25C, click on the fans they will be around 18C, click on the AC they will drop to 8 to 11C. I only drop it that low for benchmarks. And I won't be doing any of them again until I upgrade to the 1080TI.

Well I'm off Windows 10 for awhile until I decide I'm ready to spend 4 or 5 hours re-hacking the registry to stop all the phone home attempts! LOL It's just to slow to mess with right now I may add another SSD and just add it to the boot. I just really don't like anything about Win 10. I spend most of my time on Xubuntu tweaked just how I like it!

I was just reading a overclocking record on 1600X (6 core 12 threads) for around $250! It's looks like they are working out the kinks! I'm glad maybe intel will release a FAST gen 7! LOL All the gen 7's are SLOW the best one (7700) is only a 4 core! And costs $100 more then the 1600X!  I may build another AMD in the future but right now mine are all intel all the way back to a couple Q6600's :) X6950, 5960, 980X, 2600K, 3 i5's, 1 i3, 2 Q6600's, 1 core2duo lol
