I had AAAAAALMOST converted, but you'll never be able to taint me.  Last Intel I had was a slot style (what the hell did we call these) PIII 733.  From there to the mobile athlon units that you could o/c by over 100%.  That NF7-S and 2400M build I was rocking back when I met you and we did those couple raptors in raid 0!!!!!!  Had 12 Smart Case Fan II in that tower.  When I push the dial to 10 for overclock benching it was ACTUALLY louder than my vacuum cleaner lmao.  Then the Phenom into the Phenom II where I sat for like 6 years lol.  So upgrading to this chip... win10 doesn't feel slow at all.

Next up while we're still running through infant bios updates is to clean out the old mid tower and move my server hardware out of the 18'' deep 4U box and into this one.  Room for more drives and basically everything else too.  Never build in a short rack mount before, but they are NOT what you use for storage servers lmao.  Know anyone in LA that needs a 4u case?

LOL I have no loyalty to the chips! I started on intel 286, went AMD, back to intel, back to AMD then last one was a FX60, back to intel and I will stay here until AMD is faster. Then AMD again! LOL

These chips do look good you can build a nice system for the price of a top end intel CPU!

Man AMD can't get a break!

I was looking at the 16 core 32 thread Ryzen then I see the new X299 Asus Rampage VI Apex with a 18 core 36 thread intel first TERAFLOP CPU! LOL

So this entire time I've been dealing with random hard reboots during gaming that I wanted to believe was the bios.  After a few bios updates, I've finally swapped in a second PSU to see if somehow my corsair HX bit the dust several years early (4 years left of warranty lol).  Damn thing is it's a random problem in a new architecture....  One way or another I'll narrow it down.

No wide spread reports of hard reboots on this board though so it seems like something moderately unique.  No blue screen or windows event message, just straight to a reboot.  All temps are fine, line voltages look fine for when I can see them, only happens during gaming as I've run some encodes overnight and no issue.  Gaming causes a reboot in 5 minutes or 3 hours, totally random.  Problem persists through multiple bios updates and 3 fresh windows installs with different driver versions.  GPU has been clocked back to factory.  Ram is running below rated speed & at 2666 which is what AMD says is the max stable currently.

HATE unique problems..... though I have started to learn how to read windows dump files >.<

Yeah, but watch the price difference that Intel will want for that chip.

It sounds like a video or sound problem if it's only in games. Encoding beats the system down a 100 times more then gaming. Or maybe the memory timings? I would try loosening them up Corsair is pretty good memory you should be able to play with those. Or it could just be Window 10! LOL Which version of 10 are you running?

The price of the CPU doesn't look to bad to me $1,999 for 18 cores + 18 threads. I paid $1,875 for 10 cores & 10 threads it's almost double mine for $124 more! And the 10 difference in work performance over my 6 core was well worth the price. But doing motherboard & cpu is a pain!

My main concern is will it work with Linux? I only use windows a bout 2 hours a day on some days just for gaming nothing else at this point. And I'm testing gaming in Windows 8 Pro in VM so far the only problem is getting VM to access my gaming drive. I may need to just make a 1.4TB .vdi file then it would run all of them. I still get 200+ FPS in VM! LOL My video score in vm is 8+ hard drive is the low one :( 5.9 because it's on a regular drive.

For my VM I'm using a mis-match of VM & addictions if I upgrade and make them match the video performance is gone!
VM version 5.0.24 r108355 & guess addictions 5.0.16 if you upgrade guess addictions to 5.0.24 again the video score drops to 4.3.
The mis-match was pure accident! I posted it on the VM forum and the one guy over there that is a complete A$$ said "No VM can get that video score!" So I posted a screen shot and what I was doing LOL he said it was a glitch and I should upgrade! What to go SLOWER??? Well two other people did what I posted and were also able to get crazy high video scores!

So if the new boards & cpu work with my Xubuntu I will be getting that 18 core. Well as long as I see a HUGE jump in performance. Like the difference between the 6 & 10 core, but 10 to 18 should be huge! I will be able to 7zip 600 gigs of file in seconds! LOL

From actual power readings, encoding only really stresses the cpu, fraction of my ram, and like 10% of a hard drive.  Gaming pulls about 150-200 watts more and ramps the cpu, ram, and gpu.  Would think encoding is harder but in most cases your cpu is the bottleneck that will max out.

Been reading on it for weeks now and gpu can be the issue but in almost all cases it results in a bsod or has some side effect like high temps.  I've also run my ram at virtually every speed setting I can imagine including the default 2000 which on these new chips REALLY hurts since amd integrates heavily on the ram speed.

Windows 10 pro but it's been through multiple fresh installs from different build numbers.

What are you using to encode? I use Nero, CyberLink & free Handbrake. All the encoders move my CPU to 4,000 MHZ
Handbrake being the fastest all 20 CPU's at 65 to 85% 2 pass stays around 700 fps encoding.
CyberLink Power Director 15 80 to 100% all CPU's and ramps the 1080 (1900) up higher then any game I play. 700 to 1100 FPS encoding (on the 2nd pass).
Nero 2 pass all 20 CPU's 100% but still the slowest :( about 300 to 400 FPS 2nd pass all the first passes are super fast.

Most of my games don't even move my CPU it stay's between 1200 MHZ & 2400 MHZ LOL at around 5 to 8% per CPU. Only one even moves the video card BorderLand 2 will move the vid card 1500 to 1550 but the CPU's stay low. Defiance depending on the event will move the vid card to 1500-1600 (but only for a few seconds)  and CPU's to around 8 to 10%. All the COD's vid card stays at the lowest 1250 CPU's 1 to 5% Battlefield vid card 1400-1450, CPU's 2 to 4%.

My encoding uses way more CPU and way more video in cyberlink then any of my games and they are all set to the highest settings.

I did notice a huge performance boost in Windows 10 RS2 it's as fast as my Windows 8 Pro on drive speed & memory speed and not near as glitchy! Prior to RS2 Win 10 was about 20 to 25% SLOWER then my Windows 8 Pro (8.1 about the same speed as 10 why I never kept it)

I use handbrake, and I must say that Ryzen is an absolute beast in that respect.  Cut my encode time, literally, almost in half from my oc'd 8320.  And I'm only running this thing stock 'till I figure out what is going on.

Gaming has the same result for me but the actual power draw shots up far higher.

In any case, with the spare psu patched in I haven't had a reboot in 2 days and I was even able to run the unigine benchmarks, earlier they would crash reliably in the first 5 seconds lol.  Going to keep this on through the next week just to rule out coincidence but hopefully I found it.  Ever have to do an RMA for Corsair????
  • Posted June 18, 2017

lol I love Handbrake did you ever get your Linux going? You should try it Linux ZOOOOOM twice as fast as windows! Almost the same setting but man it fly's in Linux and by far is the fastest in Windows.

I only buy Corsair for 100% stock everyday computers. So I haven't ever had any go bad or need an RMA.

For my systems I only use Crucial I tried some garbage Gskill ONCE! That crap can only run at it's speed and nothing else not even lower! And it needs FULL power to be stable(will only run on XMP power settings)! My Crucial 3000 will run 2000 - 4400 and ONLY needs 1.280v to run 4000+ everything else 1.165 to 1.268v
