I have always liked Open Office more than Libre Office but Libre Office has been making huge changes and is more compatible at working with newer version of MS office. It seems the development of Libre is out running Apache Open Office and I don't see Apache Open Office ever catching up.

How to set Libre Office as the default to open Microsoft Office files.
First open the Libre Office short cut not writer or calc.
Then under Tools - then Options open Load/Save (In Linux it's Tools - Preferences)
Select all the L and S boxes that's it now all your old MS Office files will open with Libre Office.

Or right click any MS Office file, select properties, "Opens with" click the button on the right and choose LibreOffice.
