Torrents:
Downloading from torrent sites, first you need a torrent client. Utorrent, Vuze, Bittorrent
Utorrent is small program, easy to use. http://www.utorrent.com/
Vuze larger program, ton of features. http://www.vuze.com/
Bittorrent another small program basic use. http://www.bittorrent.com/

The best site of course is The Pirate Bay http://thepiratebay.sx/ But remember anything that is copyright protected IS ILLEGAL TO DOWNLOAD OR UPLOAD. In the United States, some countries do not have copyright proctection laws. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright

But Torrent sites will be the fastest way to get most big software downloads. If you are trying to download Linux (Fedora, Mint, Ubuntu...). There are lots of files that are FREEWARE that are legal to download from torrent sites. Plus tons that are not legal to download so just be careful. If you are downloading from The Pirate Bay try to download from someone with a skull next to their name, Blue Skull = Helper, Pink Skull = Trusted, Green Skull = VIP. Make sure you don't ever click any of the side banners, make sure you are running GOOD Anti-Virus. Your anti-virus should scan all files being downloaded by default, but it never hurts to check & make sure it is.

Seeders (SE) & Leechers (LE):
Seeders are the people uploading a torrent. Leechers are the people downloading a torrent. If the Leechers are much higher then Seeders the toorent will download very slow. If Seeders are 3 or 4 or higher to 1 of Leechers most files will download at your max internet speed. Remember your IP address is being seen by the people you download from and upload to. There is NO WAY TO HIDE IT, unless you use a VPN or PROXY SERVER. No matter what you read, block this, hide that... THEY DON'T WORK. Only a VPN or PROXY SERVER will hide your IP. Your IP is a unique address right to your computer and your ISP will turn off your internet service for downloading or uploading copyright protected material.

Toolbars:
Never install ANY TOOLBARS FROM ANYONE! Your browser even IE has everything you ever need built in. No matter what the toolbar says it will do, it will only lead to spyware and a back door for someone to hack you.

Installing new software:
I have posted this millions of times so here I go again.
ALWAYS CHOOSE ADVANCED or CUSTOM. If it asks a question you don't know, not to worry it will have already picked for you, just hit next. READ EVERY SCREEN, UN-CHECK everything that is installing anything but the program you are installing!

Examples: ALWAYS un-check anything you are not installing!
Would you like to set your home page to Google (huge spyware, tons of back doors hackers love this)
Would you like to install Google Chrome (great browser for the hacking public NO SECURITY)
Would you like to install Google Tool Bar (tracking 24/7 everything you do on your computer)
NOT ONLY GOOGLE ANY TOOLBAR, ANY CHANGES TO YOUR HOME PAGE, ANY BROWSER ADD-ONS. UNLESS YOU ARE INSTALLING IT :)
