New System, Installing or Upgrading to Windows 8.1 Pro
If you're using Windows 8 Pro the upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro is free. You can find it on
your Metro Screen under the store app. If it's not listed under FREE, you will be charged for
the upgrade. Also make sure you have Windows Update KB2871396 installed. If that update is
not installed the free upgrade will not show up.
When upgrading Microsoft will try to force you into logging into a Windows Live account every
time you start your computer. If you don't have one you can create one. There are some perks,
you can sync all your settings and data across all Windows 8/8.1 machines. Windows 8 lets you
sync personal settings account picture, colors, lock screen, desktop background,
desktop themes, passwords, language preferences, app settings, IE 11 settings and history and
favorites...
I have a Windows Live ID. No way do I want to be connected to Windows Live the whole time I'm on
my computer. Plus I use crazy passwords 16 or more characters! I want to just use my local account.
So here is how to use your local account. :) (while you're installing)
When you see this Choose
"Create a new account"
Then click Sign in without a Microsoft account. If you are upgrading or setup the local account
while installing, it will now default to your local account.
If you have already installed & setup a Windows Live ID to sign in on, don't worry, you can change it.
Open PC settings, move mouse pointer to the upper or lower right-corner of the screen, click
Settings
Then click
Change PC settings. You can also simultaneously press Windows
logo key and I key to open Settings, then click Change PC settings.
On the left of PC settings, click
Accounts to see your Microsoft account ID and account
picture on the right-side.
On the right, click
Disconnect that appears just below your Microsoft account name and ID.
To open switch to a local account screen.
Enter your Microsoft account password and then click Next.
Next enter a user name for your local account, a password to protect your account, re-enter the
password, and password hint then click the Next button.
Click Sign out and finish button to switch from your Windows Live account to the local account.
Now you can sign-in using this local account.
Any questions just ask :)
